Lyric Sails and Jolly Mon have returned to Frederiksted!
The last 3 months have been surreal, challenging, trying, rewarding, frustrating and triumphant…I feel like we’ve run the gamut of emotion. We were supposed to be hauled out in Tortola on September 6th for several coastguard inspections, and back in the water by the beginning of November to resume sailing, however, Hurricanes Irma and Maria had other plans for us.
Jolly Mon rode out both storms stuffed into a slip at Green Cay Marina (literally stuffed–we had to remove her rudders to fit her). Thankfully, her slip kept her safe and she emerged from both storms relatively unscathed. We were extremely lucky.
Because the entire Northern Caribbean was hit so hard, there were very few marinas that could accommodate us for our much-needed haul. In fact, there was only one. After waiting over a month for a haul-out spot, we finally got one in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. And due to contractor shortages, we ended up having to do much of the work on the boat ourselves. And there was a lot of work!
We installed new trampolines, had the mast taken down and all our rigging thoroughly inspected, re-fiberglassed several areas on the deck, re-installed our safety railings, installed new port-hole windows, painted the deck, and more! And it turned out the boat had to be completely re-painted due to some serious dock rash caused by Maria. In light of everything we went through, we decided to paint her different color–a beautiful dark red. She’s holding her new colors well and looking very elegant!
So two months after our haul and 13 weeks after Maria, we finally got her back in the water. She passed her US Coastguard sea trials with flying colors on a blustery day just east of Puerto Rico. And on December 28th, she returned back home to Frederiksted!
And not to waste any time, we had our first sunset sail of the season on December 29th! We’re jumping right back in to our sailing schedule. Sunset sails will be going out every Thursday-Sunday. We also have a full moon sail on January 2nd with the Drunk Dumplins and our New Year’s Eve sail with The Misfits of Funk to toast bye to 2017! Sails are starting to fill up so book now! Private day sails are also available any day a cruise ship is not docked (excluding our resident FEMA ship).

THE MUSIC SCHEDULE
What’s New at Lyric Sails?
Jolly Mon may have changed colors, but we still have our amazing Lyric Sails crew! Captain Henry Tonnemacher is rejoining us for his second season with Jolly Mon. Also at the helm this season will be Captain Mike Simpson of Three Sheets Sailing. First Mate Allie Meyer is back, as well as Vanessa Worona. Mate Brittany Callens is mostly up at Tap Deck, but she’ll still be slinging drinks a few times a month on the boat. Joe is officially promoted to chief “Engineer” and me (Emily!) will also be on the boat crewing, cleaning and doing everything else!
How is Frederiksted doing and what is there to do?
Frederiksted was hit very hard by the eyewall of Maria. However, lots of progress has been made. Frederiksted town has power, as well as many surrounding areas. The sand is returning to our beach and the water is as beautiful as ever! The island is very much open for business and many tourists have already returned! So what’s open in and around town?

COMING SOON: LYRIC SAILS’ OFFICIAL OFFICE
We’ve taken over a small office area right next door to Tap Deck so that we can have physical location as well as storage and prep areas for the boat. It will be open to visitors by mid-January, so you can come in, book a sail or buy a t-shirt! And Tap Deck survived the storm ok too! Tap Deck is open every day from 3-11PM. Stop in the bar before or after your sail, tell the bartender you are on Lyric Sails and get a 10% discount on your drinks that day!
