⛵ Lyric Sails is back in the water!! ⛵

October 31, 2018 by emilyweston

Sunset Sails begin November 1st!

Jolly Mon has returned to Frederiksted from her 2 month Puerto Rican vacation! While she was there she got a blinged out sail cover now sporting our web address lyricsails.com and a new head (among other things). Her crew got some much needed R&R and luckily, we didn’t experience any severe weather events beginning with an “H” (let’s all keep our fingers crossed for November).

Amazingly, this season marks the beginning of Lyric Sails’ FOURTH season!! We can’t believe how fast that time has gone by. This year, we will be sunset sailing 5x per week WEDNESDAY-SUNDAY with live music. Follow us on facebook for updates about other new events and sails we plan on introducing over the next few months!

All of our crew has returned this season–Captain’s Henry Tonnemacher and Mike Simpson will be at the helm of Jolly Mon this season, assisted by first mates Vanessa Worona, Allie Meyer, Janek Poniatowski and a couple of new faces!

Another important announcement!! Local residents (with a valid USVI drivers license), veterans and law enforcement officers now get a 10% discount on all of our evening sails! Call 340-201-5227 to book with the discount!

See you on board soon!

May Happenings on Lyric Sails!

May 11, 2018 by emilyweston

Happy May from Lyric Sails!

May has been a great month so far! The tradewinds have been bringing the island some much needed rain (and free freshwater baths for Jolly Mon!).  We’ve been doing some great sailing with the wind, but the waters have remained calm for swimming and snorkeling. It’s been perfect for our private day sails! The sand has returned beautifully to our beaches, returning some much needed normalcy for all of us!

Dolphins are making appearances more often–we seem to see them more in the summer. The last pod showed up to listen to R&B Connections for our Full Moon sail at the end of April. We haven’t been able to determine whether dolphins prefer a certain type of music–they’ve been spotted on almost all our music sails from reggae to country to bluegrass to classic rock. On a particularly memorable Mercy Child sunset sail, they showed up to listen to some Pink Floyd and stayed next to the boat for the duration of the song!

There’s also been some manatee sightings on the West End–the first sighting of the manatee was underneath Jolly Mon at her mooring! Jolly Mon did spend some time in Florida years ago, so she’s familiar with manatees. Perhaps she gave it some tips on where to find a good seagrass bed for snacks! On a more serious note, the manatees spotted have been reported as very emaciated, and probably got blown off course from PR. They are no longer native to the Virgin Islands, as we lack a freshwater source for them. A rescue team from Puerto Rico has been on island looking for the manatees to evaluate them and return them to where they came. If you see any, please report the sighting to DPNR (340-778-1082)

Back to music! Some of our musical highlights this month include Jahnee Redlocks for Reggae Night on May 13th–treat Mom to a special sunset sail for Mother’s Day!  The Dumplins Duo are playing for our Stargazing and Sunset Sail on May 15th–we do these sails on the night of the New Moon and this is an excellent chance to see bioluminescence in the water. On the other end of the spectrum, R&B Connection is playing our May Full Moon sail on Tuesday, May 29th. These sails have been selling out early, so book sooner rather than later!

Also on May 20th, we are excited to host guest Chef Lamar Bough for WINE ON THE WATER. Lamar will be cooking a 5 course farm-to-boat meal, paired with wines from Bellows/Prestige. He did a fantastic job for our April Wine Sail and we’re excited to see what he comes up with this month!!

See you on board!

Springing into April on Lyric Sails!

April 2, 2018 by emilyweston

Spring is in the Air on Lyric Sails!

Wow, it’s already April! Where did the time go? People often ask me how it’s possible to live in an endless summer, with little seasonal change. Often I joke that we do have seasons, hurricane season and non-hurricane season. But there is a more subtle difference in the ebb and flow of a year in Caribbean.

Personally, I love this time of year, when the sun sets later and rises earlier, and we eek out just that extra smidgen of daylight. The seas calm, but the breeze persists. The days are still warm, and the nights retain a slight tropical chill. Normally, our tourists and snowbirds would start fleeing back north, but this year, with our tourist season so altered by last year’s storms, there is an energy of return on island. Tourists with previously delayed vacations are returning to discover a new time of year. More long-term residents are returning as their homes get fixed and opportunities arise. And as they have for 100’s of years, the leatherback sea turtles have begun nesting on Sandy Point once more, undeterred.

With that in mind, Happy Spring and Happy April! We hope you will come out and join us for a sunset sail this month! The sunsets have been spectacular lately–the combination of slight cloud cover and Sahara dust make for some amazing colors. On clear days, we’ve even been seeing green flashes! Also, we have our Pier back! The FEMA ship is gone, so you can walk down the pier or jump off it during the day! The Pier lights have been restored (thank you VI Port Authority) so free to talk a walk down the pier after your sail and look for turtles and tarpons! Apparently there was even a baby whale shark sighting by the pier this past week!

Some of our musical highlights this month include Jahnee Redlocks for Reggae Night on April 14th and Steve Katz on April 7 and April 28th. The Drunk Dumplins are playing for our Stargazing and Sunset Sail on April 17th–we do these sails on the night of the New Moon and this is an excellent chance to see bioluminescence in the water. On the other end of the spectrum, R&B Connection is playing our April Full Moon sail on the 29th. These sails have been selling out early, so book sooner rather than later!

Also on April 22nd we are excited to host new guest Chef Lamar Bough for Wine on the Water. Lamar will be cooking a 6 course farm-to-boat meal, paired with wines from Bellows/Prestige. We can’t wait to see what he comes up with!

Feel the love on Lyric Sails! 😍

January 30, 2018 by emilyweston

February: Short But Sweet!

It’s this time of year that really makes us appreciate being in Frederiksted! Despite the recent high winds, we’re still calm as can be out West. It’s a perfect time for sailing! And of course Captain’s Henry and Mike are awesome at dodging those pesky rainclouds, keeping our passengers and musicians dry.

So come sail with us on the calm West End seas! We still have some space tomorrow Wednesday January 31st for our Full Moon Sail w/ R&B Connection! Its a Full Blood (Penumbral Eclipse) Super Blue Moon which means the moon is going to be very large and change colors as it rises. Apparently all these things at the same time only happen once in 150 years. Make it memorable and view it from the water while listening to some funky music!

Because of the blue moons in January and March, there is no full moon in February, but the sun still sets every day! We’ll be doing sunset sails Thurs-Sun (with some exceptions), and also a special romantic Valentine’s Day sunset sail w/ Alex Scimeca playing mellow love songs. That sail includes complimentary champagne all evening, chocolate dipped strawberries, and other yummy appetizers.

Other musical highlights include New Orleans visitor Chris Klein & The Boulevards, Adrian Roger’s new duo Calamity Jane and an encore by Mama’s Black Sheep! Wine on the Water also returns on Feb 25th with Chef Sean Skerrette, now the head chef at balter.

Lyric Sails is back on the water!

December 30, 2017 by emilyweston

Lyric Sails and Jolly Mon have returned to Frederiksted!

The last 3 months have been surreal, challenging, trying, rewarding, frustrating and triumphant…I feel like we’ve run the gamut of emotion. We were supposed to be hauled out in Tortola on September 6th for several coastguard inspections, and back in the water by the beginning of November to resume sailing, however, Hurricanes Irma and Maria had other plans for us.

Jolly Mon rode out both storms stuffed into a slip at Green Cay Marina (literally stuffed–we had to remove her rudders to fit her). Thankfully, her slip kept her safe and she emerged from both storms relatively unscathed. We were extremely lucky.

Because the entire Northern Caribbean was hit so hard, there were very few marinas that could accommodate us for our much-needed haul. In fact, there was only one. After waiting over a month for a haul-out spot, we finally got one in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. And due to contractor shortages, we ended up having to do much of the work on the boat ourselves. And there was a lot of work!

We installed new trampolines,  had the mast taken down and all our rigging thoroughly inspected, re-fiberglassed several areas on the deck, re-installed our safety railings, installed new port-hole windows, painted the deck, and more!  And it turned out the boat had to be completely re-painted due to some serious dock rash caused by Maria. In light of everything we went through, we decided to paint her different color–a beautiful dark red. She’s holding her new colors well and looking very elegant!

So two months after our haul and 13 weeks after Maria, we finally got her back in the water. She passed her US Coastguard sea trials with flying colors on a blustery day just east of Puerto Rico. And on December 28th, she returned back home to Frederiksted!

And not to waste any time, we had our first sunset sail of the season on December 29th! We’re jumping right back in to our sailing schedule. Sunset sails will be going out every Thursday-Sunday. We also have a full moon sail on January 2nd with the Drunk Dumplins and our New Year’s Eve sail with The Misfits of Funk to toast bye to 2017! Sails are starting to fill up so book now! Private day sails are also available any day a cruise ship is not docked (excluding our resident FEMA ship).

What’s New at Lyric Sails?

Jolly Mon may have changed colors, but we still have our amazing Lyric Sails crew! Captain Henry Tonnemacher is rejoining us for his second season with Jolly Mon. Also at the helm this season will be Captain Mike Simpson of Three Sheets Sailing. First Mate Allie Meyer is back, as well as Vanessa Worona. Mate Brittany Callens is mostly up at Tap Deck, but she’ll still be slinging drinks a few times a month on the boat. Joe is officially promoted to chief “Engineer” and me (Emily!) will also be on the boat crewing, cleaning and doing everything else!

How is Frederiksted doing and what is there to do?

Frederiksted was hit very hard by the eyewall of Maria. However, lots of progress has been made. Frederiksted town has power, as well as many surrounding areas. The sand is returning to our beach and the water is as beautiful as ever! The island is very much open for business and many tourists have already returned! So what’s open in and around town?
